Scalise, local leaders urge renewal of flood insurance program

-

The National Flood Insurance program expires in September and U.S. House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Metairie wants to make sure it's not only reauthorized by Congress but that flood insurance remains affordable.

Scalise met with local leaders and a visiting Wisconsin congressman Monday to discuss the reauthorization of the program, which impacts thousands of homeowners and business in southeast Louisiana.

Scalise says not only must the program remain affordable, but also must be consistent.

President and CEO Greater New Orleans Inc. Michael Hecht along with area parish presidents took part in a flood insurance roundtable Monday morning with Scalise.

Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Housing Insurance also attended the meeting.

They want to make sure that flood insurance program is solid and any reauthorization remains in place for several years.

Scalise will give Congressman Duffy a tour of some local flood protection levees.
