Sen. John Kennedy: "There's a New Sheriff"

Louisiana Senator John Kennedy has welcomed President Trump's decision to stage a missile attack on an airbase in Syria from which Syria's gas attack on civilians was launched earlier this week.

In an interview with FOX 8, Kennedy says the President "did the right thing."

"In order for our friends to trust us and our enemies to respect us, you can't just let something like this go," he said.

"I hope that Assad gets the message that there's a new Sheriff and that you can't do things like this without consequences," Kennedy added.

Christopher Feitweiss, a foreign policy expert at Tulane University told FOX 8, "everybody who saw those images of those dying from chemical weapons wanted to punch this guy.  I think that's essentially what we've done, we've punched this guy."

The decision to hit the airbase with 59 Tomahawk missiles fired from two U.S. destroyers was almost immediately supported by the U.K., Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Russia labeled it an act of "aggression" and called for a U.N. Security Council meeting.

Feitweiss says he believes Syria's leader has received the message Trump sent.

"He doesn't want to see this escalate.  In the past when the Israelis have struck against the Assad regime they have gotten the message and changed their behavior," he said.
