The St. Tammany Parish Mosquito Abatement Department says several of their mosquito pools and traps have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Department officials said Monday they had found a significant rise in the number of freshwater insects in the traps, likely because of rainstorms like Tropical Storm Claudette.

Crews are now increasing their spraying efforts on roadside ditches using trucks and aircraft.

West Nile Virus is spread from birds to humans by mosquito bites and can cause symptoms, including fever, headache, vomiting, seizures, and a rash.
