A Louisiana teen from Harvey is in the history books after becoming the first African-American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Zaila Avant-garde, 14, correctly spelled the word murraya for the victory and a $50,000 prize.

Murraya is a genus of flowering citrus plant found in Asia and Australia.

Avant-garde is also a basketball dribbling prodigy and the first Louisiana native to win the national spelling bee since its creation in 1925.
