Gov. Edwards Says "No Excuses" For Failures At DCFS

Gov. John Bel Edwards is accusing the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services of "failure" in its handling of certain cases.

A spokeswoman for the governor's office said on Tuesday that Edwards spoke with lawmakers and the agency's head, Secretary Marketa Garner Walters.

Agency leaders blame staffing shortages and heavy caseloads for the mishandling of some cases.

Edwards said these were "no excuses."

A recent case involved a toddler who died of a fentanyl overdose after he had suffered overdoses in the past.
