A bill to restore closed primary elections to Louisiana is on its way to the state Senate after the House passed it on Wednesday.

The special session now in progress was called mainly for the purposes of congressional redistricting. But Gov. Jeff Landry wanted lawmakers to deal with the party-based closed primary issue as well, and the bill passed by a 64-40 vote.

The bill now goes to the Senate, which gave its approval on Wednesday to a congressional redistricting map with two majority-black districts instead of only one.
