New Orleans EMS and the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office are gearing up for Mardi Gras.

EMS recently bought 27 new ambulances and other gear, making for a fleet of 56 working ambulances.

It'll be the first time in years the agency won't have to rent extra ambulances for the occasion.

On Mardi Gras itself, 17 ambulances will be assigned to the parade route.

The sheriff's office is bringing in backup from 18 outside law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety.
